- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for kick
- Pinch of nutmeg optional, traditional
- 4-6 slices bread white, whole wheat, or biscuits
